Basic Keelboat / Basic Coastal Cruising Save
$50 per person by taking both classes. Together
these two class are a comprehensive basic sailing
education.
The Basic Keelboat Class teaches the fundamentals
of sailing. It is approximately 28 hours (over 4 days) of challenging
fun and education. The class consists of 2 separate two-day
parts. Most of this class is on the water, hands-on
sailing. The boat, wind and water are your classroom.
Some of the things you will learn are sailing
terms, sail selection, raising and lowering sails,
tacking and jibing (turning the boat), docking
under sail, safety at sea, emergency procedures,
"rules of the road" and much more.
The Basic Coastal Cruising Class (2 days) focuses on operating
a sailboat using auxiliary power. Docking, departing
a dock, arriving at or leaving a harbor are some
of the skills covered. Lacking these skills
are what cause beginners the most trouble and
embarrassment. This class goes into greater detail
on subjects started in the 101 class and begins
many new subjects including reefing, anchoring
and navigation.
The two primary parts of these class are SAILING
KNOWLEDGE and SAILING SKILLS. Some of the Sailing
Knowledge portion can be done by students at home
with the study materials provided by SAILING VENTURES.
The Sailing Skills section is where we devote
most of our class time aboard a 20 to 30 foot
sailboat.
SAILING VENTURES provides the boat and all teaching
materials. Your instructor is U.S. Coast Guard
licensed and an American Sailing Association professional.
